History of JSL
The Junior Service League of Maryville was organized in 1951, under the leadership of the late Mrs. Sam (Louise) Mount. The group began with ten members and received their charter on July 19, 1951. The “Nearly New Store” was opened as the first service project and provided used clothes for men, women, and children. Since that time, Junior Service League membership has continued to grow and numerous service projects have been added. Junior Service League members volunteer hundreds of hours annually to such organizations as the United Way, Meals on Wheels, Special Olympics, Children’s Advocacy Center, and many more.
In addition to community service hours, the women of Junior Service League raise thousands of dollars each year to fund Toys for Blount County. Since the early 1970s, Toys for Blount County has been the pride of JSL and provides toys to over 1,000 children each year. Past major fundraisers benefiting Toys for Blount County include Follies, Gala and Auction, Monte Carlo Night and a New Year’s Eve Gala. Junior Service League is proud to support Blount County in many ways and we appreciate the support we receive from our community.
